Licence and reuse

The VIPP User Manual is intended to be useful beyond this website. You may copy, redistribute, translate, crop, annotate, and adapt its covered material, including for teaching and commercial work, without asking for separate permission.

What CC BY 4.0 covers

Unless a page, caption, or file says otherwise, the following material is copyright © 2026 Rensu P. Theart and licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0):

  • the original prose in this manual; and
  • the original screenshots under docs/assets/screenshots/ in the manual repository.

The complete legal code governs reuse. In practical terms, retain an attribution, link to the licence, and say what you changed. Do not add legal or technical restrictions that stop other people from exercising the same licensed rights.

How to give credit

Keep the credit close to the reused material where practical. Include the creator, manual title, precise source, licence, and a change note. Recording the manual version matters because stable and nightly pages can differ.

Use this pattern:

Rensu P. Theart, VIPP User Manual, [stable version or nightly commit], [title and URL of the source page], licensed under CC BY 4.0. Changes: [none, or a concise description].

For example:

An exact page link is preferable to the site home page. If space is limited, you may put the full attribution in a figure caption, credits page, slide notes, or another location that readers can readily find.

What is separate

The manual licence is not the software licence. The napari-vipp application and source-code excerpts copied from it are available under the BSD 3-Clause License. Repository configuration, automation, templates, and custom styles are also outside this documentation-specific CC BY 4.0 grant unless a file states otherwise.

Screenshots can contain third-party interface elements, names, trademarks, or data. Those components retain their existing rights. The documentation licence covers only the original screenshot authorship that the copyright holder can license and does not imply endorsement by napari or another third party.

Attribution is not a scientific citation

Licence attribution satisfies a reuse condition; it does not replace a scholarly citation when VIPP contributed to research. Follow the project's current citation guidance as well as crediting any manual material you reuse.
